Death takes aim with a spear as a man lies caught between different vices and an angel encouraging him to remember Christian virtues. Christ is above him and the Devil is below. An Allegory of Man. c1596 (@Tate) #mementomori #Skeleton #art
During my visit to @FoundlingMuseum I saw the exhibition ‘Fighting Talk’ telling the personal story of foundling George King who went to Trafalgar, spent over two decades at sea and later lived at the Royal Hospital in Greenwich. It’s on until 27th Feb #museums #maritime #London
Really enjoyed my visit to Queens House - a stunning display of art including pieces from @RMGreenwich and @Woburn_Abbey collections. From famous faces to familiar locales - there’s a lot to see! #Greenwich #museums #art
@shelby_zimme @VictoriaArtBath I had lots of fun searching through those cabinets of street scenes and plans! It was great to see the small details in the Bride of Death (that unusual hourglass!)
The prophet Daniel talks with Arioch to prevent the killing of the wise men of Babylon. Behind him the executioner raises his blade. Medallion from the Sainte-Chapelle. 1243-8 (@V_and_A) #StainedGlassSunday #medievalart
Dürer’s Saint Jerome points to a skull - a vivid reminder of mortality. Given to the merchants’ agent Rodrigo Fernandes de Almada in Antwerp. 1521 (Part of the Dürer's Journeys exhibition at @NationalGallery) #mementomori #skull #Dürer
@NationalGallery It’s a predictable choice for me, maybe, but I really like Dürer’s St Jerome - there’s so much detail in his expression and the image is full of symbols too!
Eight pleurants bear the effigy of Philippe Pot, seneschal of Burgundy. The monument originally stood over Philippe's grave in Cîteaux Abbey. Quite brilliantly, the pleurants' mournful expressions are visible underneath their hoods. (@MuseeLouvre) #funeral #mourning #medieval
Two musical cadavers lead the dance of death - one is wrapped loosely in a shroud. (@GallicaBnF Français 995) #mementomori #medieval
Chaos abounds in this image of 1814 Frost Fair on the Thames in London. As some enjoy 'Good Gin' and the warmth of a tent, others slip or crash through the ice. One man waves his arms in hope of rescue (From my trip to @MuseumofLondon Docklands) #London #Thames #History
