On this day in 1784, Samuel Johnson died aged 75. He was born in Lichfield, but lived most of his life in London - he is buried in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey next to his former student, and dear friend, David Garrick.

On this day in 1709, Samuel Johnson was born in Lichfield, Staffordshire. Famous for his ability to capture the human condition, 310 years later we can still relate to many of his works and quotes whilst navigating a very different life and world.
On this day in 1763, Johnson and Boswell met for the first time, in Davies Bookshop, beginning their famous friendship. Johnson said of friendship 'The feeling of friendship is like that of being comfortably filled with roast beef; love, like being enlivened with champagne'.
