You won’t see many photos like this taken c1880 or indeed any photographs of Women Breastfeeding from this or any other period. It’s an intimate photograph, the mother’s expression tender & loving. It’s a remarkable piece of social history that shatters Victorian Convention

I’ve just sent the afternoon convincing myself this is Conan Doyle with a very aged Altamont to the left. Wonderful photograph regardless
