Last of four, with a sad story but an unforgettable soul, here's the story of Slava Raskaj's life to go along with my portrait of her.
Slava Raskaj was born at the very start of 1877, in a town near the border surrounded by nature, to a Croatian middle class family. (16/22)
This is my favourite portrait of the series!
Lily Unden was borh in 1908 in France, from a Luxembourger family who returned to their country just before the First World War started. The conflict didn't stop her from studying art in Brussels, Paris, Metz and Strasbourg. (11/?)
Today, a short trip further back in time for my portrait of Clara Peeters! We think she might've been born in 1594 in Antwerp, but certainty is lost to time. Exceptionally gifted, we don't know where she was trained but she signed her first painting when she was 12. (7/?)
By the time this happened, she had divorced already. Later in life, she kept her art 'useful': she worked in textile designs and postcards. This little painting, to me, shows just how fine any art that is not technically 'fine art' can be. This was Lydia Mei. (6/?)
This is my portrait of Lydia Mei (1896-1965), an Estonian artist usually known as a watercolorist, but versatile and able in all painterly media. She was the second daughter of three, and they were all artists. They were born on an island, their father a ship's captain. (2/?)
