A weird move I see sometimes is 'pre-emptive knight defense'. Like this pawn advance by the opponent here to which the computer is like 'why bro?' It's just a human move to stop my knight advancing (which I wasn't even intending) after being traumatized by too many knight tactics

lol I randomly fiddled with the analysis again and confirmed the computer engine loves hitting the opponent's f pawn with a bishop sacrifice ... I'll definitely try it when in a position to do so

Saved my queen by knight-forking the attacking piece with their king in opposite directions ... it's like that UFC match where someone did a spinning kick by bouncing off the side of the cage, lol

I was thinking like, should I threaten the rook or the king? Then realized... fall one square back and hit 'em both! The computer analysis doesn't even recognize the brilliance of this move cause it says I was winning anyway haha

Oh snap now recognizing that queen+bishop checkmate pattern means I can see an attempted Scholar's Mate quicker than the memorization-based 'avoid being attacked on the f pawn' (both types of thinking are useful though)

Also recognizing that anytime your bishop and queen are hanging around the opponent king you should look for a potential checkmate

A tactic I've started using more is the 'skewer', ie. you check the king then take the undefended piece behind it after the king has to move away. At my level (around 450 on chess .com) people often leave their rooks like this

I noticed this some days ago but a surprisingly simple way to simplify calculations about fighting over a square is to count defenders/attackers. Like I messed up going after the pawn here with 3 attackers cause the other person had 3 defenders

Hmm I can't usually hit 'em with a mid-game checkmate but got one here... now my rating is up to 515. Next goal.. 530?

Avoiding sudden checkmates by highlighting opponent-controlled squares.. of course over time I'll want to be able to 'see' this without manually tracking/highlighting
