Templar Tower - this little area in behind the Papal Palace was the headquarters of the for a while in the Middle Ages in the 1100’s.

What a pleasure it was to draw by the canal in Utrecht, south of Amsterdam. Boats lazily floated by. Families and friends ate by the water. In this, the first day out of the big city, I noticed how quiet it was, because so many people use bikes instead of cars.

St. James the Apostle is the second oldest Catholic church in Manhattan and where my earliest Irish immigrant ancestors were married in 1866. This was a rough and tumble area back then. Long ago, there was a gate across the front as protection from anti-Catholic mobs.

The Lynches walked through this big doorway uninvited and poor on June 7, 1884. Before them, other ancestors, the O’Days, did the same in the spring of 1865. Millions of Americans can trace their families to this doorway at the southern tip of Manhattan: Castle Gardens.

A project I’m now working on is researching my immigrant ancestors and drawing where they lived. It combines two hot topics: and The records I find resemble the immigrant ancestor’s house that stood before me in this picture, far from complete.

My immigrant great-great-grandmother Mary Sullivan Lynch lived in this house for a year in 1903 as a widow. When She died in 1911, the obituary in the newspaper described her this way: “She was a woman of pleasing characteristics, and her death will be deeply regretted.”

Guns for Hire: when my ancestors emigrated from Kerry, Ireland in the 1880’s they came to and found themselves making pistols in this Hopkins & Allen factory. In 1905, the warehouse was robbed of its entire contents.
