I think it's crucial that Kaine isn't depicted as outright cruel in this period of time. He has a sense of justice just like Peter and Ben, it's just warped by his own suffering and his abuse at the hands of the Jackal.

Okay I'll be real this would've placed second if it wasn't like 5 pages. Claremont masterfully reworks the FF's transformation for drama in a version where Johnny's first act as the Human Torch was to absorb the heat of the crash -- and explode.

🥈Mythos: Fantastic Four
What this loses in points for not going with the rocket ship theft, it makes up for in unbelievably beautiful art by Paolo Rivera. Fun, heartfelt, and sweet with a gorgeous "reasoning behind the powers" page. My top pick for a more modern origin story.

The original! The gold standard! You don't get better than stealing a rocket so you can beat the commies to the moon. Kirby's figures are so human, even in the midst of inhuman transformation, and Lee's dialogue zings. A reason it's an instant classic.

Extended edition of BRSS, a comic I just said wasn't good, where it's just Kaine and Aracely e-mailing back and forth. She thinks this is all very stupid but if he doesn't bring her back a souvenir she won't speak to him for a week.
