A Judge Holden wannabe and Jojo villain Anastasio presents a distorted view of our relations. Despite being given a chance to redeem himself, Anastasio is unable to grant that to other people, retreating within himself and his obsession with equating death to forgiveness.

Pascuala is forced to destitution after losing her home and family to the Inquisition. Desperate to find warmth, she's driven to criminality, violence, and deception, losing her way in the process of trying to get back to what is familiar and necessary.

Juana's desire to reach the ocean is blended in with her fellow pirates' desire to survive. She wants to achieve her dream but can't sacrifice the people who've helped her, stuck in place and represented by being unable to kill her former lover, now a Seaborn.

Some of the better Alter events come from characters gaining something new as opposed to being set dressing for someone else's story. Thorns has always had this odd relationship with Iberia, growing up poor, then under the guidance of someone who is ultimately a threat.
