Laka is the Hawaiian Goddess of fertility, the forest, and all vegetation. She is credited with inventing the Hula, or artful storytelling though dance. Hula dancers offer prayers, and wear sacred Ti leaves to ward off evil, attract good, and to honour Laka.

In Hawaii, a myth describes how the moon came to be called Mahina. The deity Hina, tired of weaving kapa cloth, scaled a rainbow to the Sun, but it was too hot. She then climbed to the Moon, and, pleased, made it her home. “Mahina” is derived from her name.

In Polynesian myth, there are four sisters of the snow covered mountains, deities of Mauna Kea. Poliʻahu lives in the summit, Waiau, is a guardian, Kahoupokane is a weaver, and Lilinoe is the maker of mist. Together they create balance between ice and heat.
