What does any of that have to do with Walt Kelly's humble possum, Pogo? Pogo first appeared, not in comic strips, but in the pages of Dell Comics, and only later found fame in syndicated strips.
But maybe that is star power and a good director for ya. We watch to see Wayne (playing older here) navigate the crisis, and does so with minimal use of force and an attempt at negotiation. No one else really matters - its just Captain Brittles' Last Patrol.

The Hound of the Baskervilles is just a superb tale, with quite an emphasis on Dr. Watson. There is the classic '2nd murder' as well, which may have helped cement that trope into mystery fiction.
