Watson and the Shark, John S Copley (1778)

A young cabin boy (Brook Watson) was attacked by a shark while swimming in Havana harbor. He was saved, but lost his leg. He later grew up to be Lord Mayor of London. The painting created buzz by being so grisly (Colonial JAWS!)

Summer, 1938. Centaur's Amazing Mystery Funnies 1

I was looking through some of these 1970s Ghost Rider issues over the weekend, and it struck me how *fantastic* they are, in several ways. Marvel Bronze Age comics often have this unexpectedness to them, from D-list villains to Satan to just oddball passersby.

Like Betty Boop layer, there is something loveable and a bit subversive on some of the Bonzo merch.

"Nothing to write home about" has Bonzo smokong and looking at girls dressing or changing.

George Studdy's cartoon pup, Bonzo. In the 1920s, Bonzo would be in British magazines, postcards, cartoons, stage and mass produced merchandise.
