Picked up the Eureka Sammo boxset to continue my education and well, not sure you lot had prepared me for the insane level of comedy mashed with carnage in Eastern Condors (1987) Hell, show me a team roll call and I’m already smiling, but there are so many awesome scenes in this!

Based on a true story of the smuggling of illegal immigrants, Dir. Shim Sung-bo’s Haemoo (Sea Fog, 2014) took me by surprise. It begins fairly light and humorous, then suddenly begins to drag you further and further down through increasingly chaotic, gut-wrenching, darker scenes

After revisiting Heat, I immediately got a hankering to rewatch Ronin (1998), so I have gone from maybe the best shootout in cinema, to a taught, impeccably-crafted, unforgettable car chase. Ordinary cars, no music, just the glorious sounds of engines, tyres and crunching metal

There is a lot I could say about my revisit with Heat (1995) last night, but the element that really set of an explosion of joy was the almighty shoot out. I swear I have never enjoyed, or literally felt, the reverberation of the thunder of so many gun shots before. Masterpiece.

Human Lanterns(1982) I am surprised at how dark this fantastic mix of wuxia and horror was. A killer hatches an intricate revenge plot, enjoys himself by capturing his nemesis’ love interests - torturing, raping and removing their skin to make pretty lanterns. Beautiful and mad!

Only my 3rd anime, I am relieved to find Princess Mononoke(1997) was one I felt captivated by. I enjoyed the abundance of nature, the simple but very strong story and message. It is magical but not childish, at times violent, and of course, beautiful animation and soaring score
