July 6, 1995: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace: Terryl Whitlatch’s incredible concept artwork depicting a variety of Tatooine denizens on their way to the podrace. The creature landing pads she had devised can be seen in the background.
I have collected Damon Runyon’s interviews and fight reports on World Heavyweight Champion Jack Dempsey in a trilogy of books, that I have also collected in THE COMPLETE JACK DEMPSEY. (FYI Amazon is currently blocking the Kindle for the third book.) https://t.co/zRyxhb30cw
June 24, 1996: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace: In this deliciously black comedy moment, Terryl Whitlatch envisaged scavenger spectators who would feast upon the remains of unsuccessful pod racers. I love that the creature at right is even licking its lips in anticipation.
June 22, 1999: Star Wars: Attack of the Clones: Between June and October 1999 multiple artists submitted designs for the clone armor, each of them trying to capture the essence of both stormtrooper and Mandalorian armors. Here is a Doug Chiang concept for a helmet.
June 21, 2002: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: @rchurchdesign’s concept for a tank droid that uses treads for traction and transforms into an all-terrain vehicle.
June 20, 2002: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: Right at the beginning of preproduction George Lucas suggested using Joe Johnston’s unused Rebel cruiser design for Return of the Jedi (1983), and Erik Tiemens’s concept became a Separatist destroyer in the battle over Coruscant.
September 26, 2001: Star Wars: Attack of the Clones: Core ship/Erik Tiemens. Chiang: “George threw me for a loop. He said, ‘Let’s put a little Death Star ball in the center.’ The ball lands on Geonosis and the Geonosians develop the Death Star. Nothing is arbitrary with George.”
June 13, 2003: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: Erik Tiemens’s concept for a secret meeting in Bail Organa’s office in which senators discuss the Chancellor’s increasing power. The scene was shot July 30, 2003, but deleted from the final cut. It is the birth of the Rebellion.
June 13, 2003: Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: @rchurchdesign’s concept, as per the draft script, shows Yoda being pursued by clone troopers on Kashyyyk, the searchlight from the Republic scout walker revealing his location.
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith: George Lucas worked with Iain McCaig and Derek Thompson to simplify the opening sequence down to the opening crawl and then jumps straight into the chaos of the space battle. These thumbnails were drawn as storyboards, then previz, then shot.
