ON this day in 1795 the Dutch Republic becomes the Batavian Republic (a French client state). The confederal structure of the old republic was replaced by a unitary state. For the first time in Dutch history, the constitution that was adopted in 1798 had a democratic character.

On this day in 2010, the Netherlands Antilles was dissolved. The Caribbean islands Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten became countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba became special municipalities of the Netherlands. 🌴🇦🇼🇨🇼🇸🇽🇳🇱
On this day in 1799 the Battle of Bergen was fought. French and Dutch troops defeated a Russian British force under the command of the Duke of York who had landed in North Holland. Today the battlefield is marked by the “Russian Monument” (1902).

On this day in 1643 the Dutch establish a colony in the ruins of Valdivia in southern Chile. The colony was named Brouwershaven, after its commander. It was already abandoned on 28 October. The occupation caused great alarm among Spanish authorities which fortified the area.
