Today is the Feast of James the Apostle ('the Greater'). James is the patron saint of Spain and is traditionally remembered as the first apostle to be martyred. This hand-coloured engraving is taken from a 1710 edition of the Book of Common Prayer [**H5145.A4 1710]

Today the Church commemorates Mark the Evangelist. This image from the 'Liber chronicarum', printed in Nuremberg in 1493 by Anton Koberger with designs by Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, shows Mark with his traditional symbol of a lion. [[ZZ]1493.1, f. 104r]
Today the Church remembers Edmund, King of East Anglia. This is a late 13th century illumination of his martyrdom from the Lambeth Apocalypse (MS 209, f. 51).
