Day 20 - Four Petal Pawpaw

This member of the custard apple family is restricted to just two counties in Florida, and is endangered due to habitat loss. It is a long lived species, has edible fruits, and grows in coastal pine scrub habitats.

Day 19 - Southern Magnolia

Native to the southeastern region of north america, the southern magnolia is a large evergreen tree that is now cultivated worldwide. It’s one of my favorite trees, especially to illustrate! 💛

Day 18 - Coral Honeysuckle

A great alternative to the invasive Japanese honeysuckle, this native species attracts hummingbirds, bees, and a wide variety of other pollinators. It’s a hardy plant that can be grown as vines or shrubs, and is very easy to grow!

Day 17 - Pacific Bleeding Heart

This plant grows from California to British Columbia in moist woodlands. While the Japanese bleeding heart is more popular in cultivation, this species makes a great addition to a native plant garden!

day 16 - Goldthread

This plant’s common name is derived from its long yellow root system, which is said to have multiple medicinal properties. It grows in shaded woodlands and blooms very quickly, so can be easily missed if you're not looking for it at the right time!

Day 15 - Running Strawberry Bush

Neither a true strawberry or a bush, this plant is a fast-growing ground cover plant found in eastern North America. I'd never heard of this weird little plant but the fruits are so cool and strange I had to draw them! :o

Day 14 - Celandine Poppy

This beautiful woodland flower gets its name from it’s family member, greater celandine, and is easily confused with it. It grows in shaded, moist areas and is a great addition to gardens!

Day 12 - Eastern Redbud

In the spring, this tree becomes engulfed in tiny pink blooms that attract a variety of pollinators, including early-season butterflies. Their flowers can be eaten raw or fried, and when picked fresh, their seed pods can be eaten like peas.

day 11 - Blue Camas

Found across the western mountains, blue camas was a staple plant for indigenous communities as a beautiful garden plant and as a valuable food source. Its bulbs are highly nutritional, but should not be confused with the toxic death camas.

Day 10 - American Persimmon

Persimmon trees can be found across eastern North America, and have characteristic dark gray bark that is broken up into a block-like pattern. The fruit is very astringent with unripe, so make sure you let it soften a bit before enjoying it!
