Day 9 - Bitterroot

Bitterroot can be found in grasslands and forests in the west, and has edible, bitter roots from which it gets its name. It is the state flower of Montana, and the Bitterroot Mountains, Valley, and River are all named for this plant.

Day 8 - Great Blue Lobelia

With its stalk of showy blue flowers, lobelia is a great addition to any native flower garden! Despite its beauty and source of nectar for insects and hummingbirds, all parts of this plant are toxic.

Day 7 - May Apple

This spring ephemeral plant grows in eastern North American forests in large colonies, and almost all parts of it are toxic. Its solitary flower grows in the axil of the two leaves, and when pollinated, will ripen into an edible green fruit!

day 6 - Tulip Poplar

More closely related to magnolias than to tulips or poplars, the tulip poplar is one of North America's tallest hardwood trees. It is an abundant food source for deer, birds, and other pollinators, and is also my favorite native tree species! :^)

day 5 - Twinflower

This plant’s leaves and flowers all come in pairs, and they are often overlooked and crushed by hikers when not in bloom. They’re such a dainty little wildflower, I hope to come by them someday! 💛

day 4 - Azure Bluets

Azure bluets can form great swaths of blue in fields and open woods, and are native to eastern North America as far as Oklahoma. I've never seen them before but hope I get the chance to someday!

day 3 - Lone Manzanita

Like many other members of the Arctostaphylos genus, the lone manzanita is a threatened species found in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. They are a member of the Ericaceae, or heath/blueberry family and produce an edible berry.

day 1 - Sneezeweed

Helenium autumnale is of my favorite native plants! 💛 Its common name is derived from its former use, which was to be dried and inhaled to cause sneezing. This was done to supposedly rid the body of evil spirits.
