During her time in the cell, Alastor was held in a dark cold bag, away from her. While Alastor, being a summoned creature, couldn't actually 'die' from starvation, his growth as a familiar has been stunted for a very long time afterwards.

It was at this time that the girl, desperate for any sort of company and too young to summon competently, created Alastor. Instead of simply summoning him, she cerated him from her own soul, though at the start his sentience was little more than that of an animal.
