Illustration from MASTERING MANGA 3. With this book, I was eager to provide lessons on the full breadth of different styles that fall under the category of "manga/anime." With this one I hoped to represent shojo manga (which itself encompasses quite a wide range of styles!).
Panels from THE COMIC BOOK LESSON. I tried to make the artwork similar to what I did in The Drawing Lesson, since they're companion books, but I allowed myself to work in a slightly different style, with a less monochromatic approach to the coloring. https://t.co/hz0IvHYcka
Illustration from MANGA ART; I liked this one enough that I wanted it on the front cover. I had never drawn a Vespa before, so it was fun learning all the little quirky details of what make those vehicles so distinctive.
Every month I give a signed original piece of art to someone who backs me on Patreon at the "Fellowship of the Beloved Gouache" level. This is the piece I'll be giving away for this month. It's not too late to put yourself in the running: https://t.co/OSXhRV5lYZ
Illustration from MASTERING MANGA 3. In this book I was eager to represent the wide variety of styles that are encompassed by the words "manga" and "anime." This was my attempt to show a more anatomically realistic approach. In other lessons I showed cartoony styles.
Here's a comparison of the "proposed" art for MY LAST SUMMER WITH CASS and the final published art. The first was from the pitch I created to show publishers what kind of book I had in mind. Interesting to see what changed, and what stayed the same.
This week's Patreon patron spotlight is on Quick Draw Chev, whose work you can find at: https://t.co/pg1xqnbiuc He does incredible artwork-- as you can see here-- in a wide variety of styles. Go have a look and give him a follow!
When I was planning THE COMIC BOOK LESSON, I did these drawings of the three "teacher" characters in the story. For fun, I've dropped in a pic of what Madeline ended up looking like in the finished book; somewhere along the way she became a manga fan. :)

Illustration from MANGA ART. With this one, I challenged myself to use colors that I don't normally choose.
In my how-to-draw-chibi book (called simply "Chibi!") I included a step by step lesson for creating this bookplate design. One for all you book lovers out there :)
