Last year around this time, during a break between books, I created a series of 10 cartoons for sharing on Twitter and elsewhere. I thought it might be fun to revisit these, one per week. This one remains as true for me now as it was back then! :)
The Chibi "Glomp!" I originally drew this for a YouTube video, then created a color version for MANGA ART. It's been a great pleasure seeing others use this pose for their own drawings over the years. :)
Illustration from MASTERING MANGA 3. Another of my early efforts at computer coloring. Note how on her arms some of the squares are a slightly lighter shade. This is a trick you can use to make a surface look more solid, less "flat" in appearance.
Hope you all have a great one! Me, I will be handing out candy (and possibly sampling one or two along the way 😅)
Artwork from MASTERING MANGA 3. This was done at a time when I was teaching myself how to color digitally, using Photoshop. I had been adding grey tones to artwork digitally for many years (almost from the dawn of my comics career), but was still new to full digital coloring.
Preparatory art for MY LAST SUMMER WITH CASS. While I liked the idea of starting the story when Megan and Cass were still toddlers, I eventually realized that I needed them old enough to have at least semi-clear memories of events from that time. So I made them slightly older.
This week my Patreon Patron Spotlight is on David Osborn, whose Insta is at: https://t.co/vmszR8iZsa As you can see, he did this marvelous illustration of Talia! He also has created a very cool online comic called Clen-Zing, which you can view here: https://t.co/w3H58wK2QN
Illustration from MASTERING MANGA 3. With this book, I was eager to provide lessons on the full breadth of different styles that fall under the category of "manga/anime." With this one I hoped to represent shojo manga (which itself encompasses quite a wide range of styles!).
Panels from THE COMIC BOOK LESSON. I tried to make the artwork similar to what I did in The Drawing Lesson, since they're companion books, but I allowed myself to work in a slightly different style, with a less monochromatic approach to the coloring. https://t.co/hz0IvHYcka
Illustration from MANGA ART; I liked this one enough that I wanted it on the front cover. I had never drawn a Vespa before, so it was fun learning all the little quirky details of what make those vehicles so distinctive.
