Day 1 of #TransportAZ is "A is for Accessibility". Arguably the most important element of public transport is providing door to door access for all which we currently fail at. With an ageing population & increased awareness of invisible disabilities we have to get better.
Week 5 of #Bridges2021 is Sarah Cooper; Principle Engineer at @TonyGeeLLP who worked on the Blackfriars Station Refurbishment. Utilising the old piers from the first bridge to widen the station & create longer platforms. Incredible engineering & logistical challenge.
Week 2 of #Bridges2021 & it's Trish Johnson, Bridgemaster at @brunelsbridge & former Head of Maintenance at the Severn Bridge & ICE Regional Director. In charge of keeping the iconic Clifton Suspension bridge maintained including refurbishments, safety access & aesthetics.
It's day 24 of #BridgeAZ & we've gone for a mix. A big X suspension bridge thanks to @FBourgeon & @VJOsgood, a musical deck conceptual idea found by @DrVikkiBurns & the rather lovely idea of Xeriscaping a bridge thanks to @EngineerDustin.
"X gon give it to ya..."
It's day 19 of #BridgeAZ & I'm entering the unknown with Stress/Steel ribbon bridges. Variant of a suspension bridge that plugs the cables into precast deck segments which adds stiffness. Unlikely for big spans but a material efficient method ideal for sleek pedestrian bridges.
It's day 16 of #BridgeAZ & it's Pontoons. Utilising a floating support to cross an obstruction rather then installing a permanent structure into the bed. Can be for temporary use or if the depth is too great for a foundation. Norway have a design for a floating suspension bridge.
It's day 10 of #BridgeAZ & it's the Silver Jubilee Bridge across the Mersey & Manchester Ship Canal. Younger than I thought, opened in 1961 as a replacement to a transporter bridge & now has been closed to vehicle's to allow maintenance since the new Mersey Gateway has opened
Here endth an insane 7 days...
Honoured to host @designfestbrum at @STEAMhouseUK with 15 incredible talks...
