The tragedy of Academy Comics getting the Robotech license pulled was the fact that they were trying build a larger universe beyond prequels, sequels, and shameless cashgrab crossovers.

I'll always recommend Planetes to anyone looking for a good hard sci-fi series. While it does dive into the darker aspects of humanity, it never loses a sense of optimism, and a sense of wonder to the unknown future.
