my most hopelessly naive thought is that AVATAR will raise the bar for how other big budget blockbusters are allowed to look, especially following a Marvel Phase 4 that’s an all time visual low for the MCU, and now maybe Disney will actually try to make movies look stunning again

I just left round 3 of AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER and there was a guy on his phone most of the first two hours, but once that third act hit he was literally on the edge of his seat until credits. This movie leaves people on a high cinema has rarely offered in years. It's magic.

AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER is a wonder, a cinematic symphony of space whales and crab-mecha, god-tier action and environmental stewardship. But beneath the waves, Cameron made an emotional, complex family drama, with a stunning climax that reminds you why he's the king. I loved it.

ANDOR might wind up being the most cinematic and beautiful Star Wars has looked since THE LAST JEDI

Villeneuve has become one of the most gifted filmmakers at using CGI, and a lot of that is the rare art of knowing how to “light” effects. CG elements are carefully graded part of the overall visual design. Again, very obvious, but the MCU barely knows how to do this.

I haven’t seen discourse on an upcoming movie turn around faster than AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER and that is the power of James Cameron

Bayona elevates Trevorrow's galaxy brain-ass screenplay with gorgeous, expressive and nearly poetic images, and I wish all franchise movies put half as much care into how they looked

THE WIND RISES is the best movie I've ever seen about an artist interrogating the tension between their strong anti-military views and their childlike fascination with military machinery (and in Miyazaki's case, especially if it flies) https://t.co/bszq39B8cr

my appreciation has only deepened as an adult, with Lucas’ oddball approach the sign of a deeply strange man putting all of himself, probably too much, into these films, and there’s something endearing and occasionally soulful about watching them.
