THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is a messy and broken movie that's also my favorite of the trilogy. Nolan's at his most brazen and maximalist; it's a moody psychodrama, disaster movie actioner and full-tilt historical epic all at once, with a truly colossal scale to match. I love it.

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is the BATMAN V SUPERMAN of kaiju movies. It is desperately overwrought, inexplicably stupid (often contradictory), but full of bold ideas & truly striking imagery that never cohere in a satisfying way. I badly wanted to like this more than I did.

THE FORCE AWAKENS is still my favorite STAR WARS since EMPIRE. Every scene flows into the next like water, its sense of wonder is infectious, & works as an elating fairy tale about finding inner power. When Rey summons Luke's saber, I still get goosebumps. I probably always will.
