Wow. Naimakka, Sweden dropped to -40.9°C this morning. ❄️🥶
First -40°C of the season in the Nordics.

@MattiKahra @markkuilmari Siinä on pohjimmiltaan kyse normaalista ilmakehän dynamiikasta.
Suihkuvirtaukset muodostavat ilmakehässä pitkiä aaltoja (ns. Rossby-aaltoja). Siinä missä Brittiläinen Kolumbia on ollut tällaisen aallon harjalla, Suomi on ollut aallon pohjalla.

The cold spell in the Nordics will intensify over the weekend as even colder air mass flows over the region.
Pretty harsh start to the meteorological winter!
November ends cold, especially in northern Finland. But, is the change back to mild pattern already on the horizon?
If you ask CFSv2, the answer is yes.
The formation of Atlantic Ridge -type of regime in the North Atlantic later this week means the first decent opportunity for winter in northern Europe and Finland.
Still unsure how cold it will be, but definitely something is brewing.
October 2021 was globally the 3rd warmest (as per @CopernicusECMWF ERA5 data).
But if considering only the land area (where we people actually live!), the month was the *1st warmest* on record.
The peak intensity of today's storm (~962 hPa) is close, if not even outside the ERA5 1961-2020 climatology for October.
Very unusual storm for the time of the year!
Lots of subtropical moisture in the form of an atmospheric river is approaching Finland tonight.
The source areas of the moisture are in the subtropical Atlantic.
Note that the forecast anomalies are relative to 1993-2016.
Since 1993, there's over 2°C warming in the northeastern corner of the European domain, so the predicted anomalies in that area are not surprise.
