Being a seiyuu otaku and a STARTO fan lately:
Anyway if you're interested in manga that are definitely female-oriented with the sensibilities/expression that flourished in that demo, but that are cross-genre and therefore more accessible to men skeptical about stereotypical shoujo romance, I recommend some of these!
When I was a child, no one told me that when you're in your 30s, you're still 13
excuse me?! Are Naruto and his dad and Itachi really allowed to show midriff........
The vibes are like a calmer mix of Parasite (the Korean one: suspenseful infiltrating rich people's house as the help but discovering darker secrets) + Something's Wrong with Us (my fave josei manga: girl vowing to get to the bottom of the crime that ruined her mother's life).
Started reading Burn the House Down for JP manga club bc I guess we're just on a crime/thriller kick. Revenge story of a girl who vows to take back the life another woman stole from her mother. Not as suspenseful as other Kodansha thrillers I read recently, but it's interesting.
We read this title, Sayonara Miniskirt (EN: Not Your Idol) in my Japanese group's manga club. It ran in Ribon but it's intense and thought-provoking for a middle school shoujo manga.
I thought it'd be about idols + mystery, but it's about feminism, even though they say the word
These too. I wanted to choose titles not available in English and not too long. Technically Firefly Wedding has an English digital translation tho.
Tbh most JP manga I read is just shoujo manga but I'm trying to not just impose my tastes lol. It's still mostly my taste tho...
Friends started a Japanese book club but I felt I was too low level to participate (they're reading Natsume Soseki's Bocchan) so I sat out. They're suggesting letting me run a manga club instead heh
Thinking of suggesting these as options across different demographics and tastes
There are only two hairstyles in anime.
Personally I'm more in the Kashagiri/Juushi/Kagetora/that guy from Black Star camp, myself!
