As fighting raged, Clifford's shot ran out of ammunition, forcing them to fall back to their pike. The Irish came on and closed to finish the crown army, but 'rain in such torrents' extinguished their matchcords rendering every gun useless-unbroken Clifford's men made it to Sligo

Shows just how charismatic and charming Tyrone could be as Mabel was 20 years his junior. However, charm did not make Tyrone a good husband and he was a less-than-loyal spouse. The marriage produced no children and Mabel died just 4 years later-no known likeness of Mabel exists

Burgh didn't think for a second he was leaving Conyers Clifford dangerously exposed out in the west at his siege of Ballyshannon. Burgh's withdrawal freed up Tyrone's blocking force. Hugh Maguire and Cormac MacBaron's troops streamed west to cut Clifford's line of retreat

Norreys had many years of experience fighting in Ulster and was not squeamish about his hands dirty. He was central to the massacre Brain O'Neill's household in 1574, where they were guests of O'Neill, and the slaughter of civilians on Rathlin Island in 1575

Even after the devastating defeat of Tyrone & his allies at Kinsale in 1601, Mountjoy thought better of trying to force this pass in Summer campaign 1602. Rather than hammer his way to Dunagannon, Mountjoy sidestepped the defences, building Charlemont Fort a few miles downriver
