OTD 1589 Ships of English Armada straggled to home ports. Officers like Norreys tried to conceal the enormity of the disaster & Queen reported 'well pleased', but of 25k who left just 5k returned & over 1/3 of fleet-40 ships lost-tragedy rarely makes it into Elizabethan narrative

Cornwall was suspected as his Irish wife was a close friend to MacBaron and acted as envoy to negotiate the surrender of the position. It was commonly thought (& occasionally proved right) that Irish wives undermined the fidelity of the formerly loyal English subjects in Ireland.

OTD 1601 In the early morning darkness, M'joy's infantry assaulted across the R. Blackwater. Artillery loaded with musket balls suppressed the Irish defenders as the crown's troops entered the Irish works. After close -quarter fighting, the Irish were forced back

OTD 1598 The commander of the Blackwater fort, Capt Williams was not the kind of guy to sit and take it. Slipping out of the fort, he captured 18 of Tyrone's mares 'which will serve him & his company a good time'- with horseflesh back on the menu fort could hold out a bit longer

Alas this was not to be. At the last minute Philip changed the plan [WTF!] and ordered the armada to Brittany to seize Brest, infuriating the expeditions commander. The ships sailed north 25 Oct but a storm devastated the fleet which lost over 30 ships and thousands of men

OTD 1600 Report that Cuconnacht Maguire had drawn his forces against succession rival Conor Roe Maguire in Fermanagh '& burnt all his country, being the upper part of Fermanagh, and killed some of his men, so that they are both in arms one against the other'

O'Connor later got whacked for his troubles but Carew was not one to welch on a debt. After the war he ensured Margaret, O'Connor's widow received a pension of £100 per annum. Lucky old Margaret....

OTD 1602 Mountjoy started building Charlemont fort & bridge as a springboard for taking Dungannon. Often called an artillery fort it was not designed to mount cannon. Demi-bastions & sconce on far bank only provided firing steps and loopholes for defence by firearms
