Gotta say I think manga/anime has superhero comics completely beaten when it comes to designing a character who can become giant and fight things.
Giant regular human in a brightly colored outfit has never not looked terrible to me.
I prefer the AOT or Ultraman takes.

If you're an artist and don't spin the surface you're drawing on regularly you need to be slapped.
Work with your wrist, not against it.
Why would you battle your anatomy like that?

Braindead was too strong a word if you're taking it literally.
But the dragon thing is definitely coming form that way of looking at things.
I mean, mario games have had dragons for years.
