Serene and idyllic, Brueghel’s river view evokes the spirit of man’s harmonious interaction with nature.

Brueghel exploits this in his view of daily life along the Schedlt river. The sunlit river is the subject of this narrative scene that depicts a ferry landing just outside the city of Antwerp (identified by the cathedral in the distance).

This work is painted on copper, which was a popular medium for Brueghel and for many other Dutch and Flemish painters. Because oil paints can’t “sink into” copper like they do on canvas, they create a smooth and highly luminous surface.

Lady Caroline Howard, daughter of Frederick, the fifth Earl of Carlisle, and Margaret Caroline Howard, was portrayed by Reynolds when she was seven years old.

Caroline's father described her as a determined, strong-minded child.

Born in 1594 in Normandy, near Rouen, Nicolas Poussin moved to Paris in 1612, where he saw works by and engravings after Raphael and Giulio Romano, artists of the High Renaissance, who would continue to inspire him throughout his career.

The work also includes drawing with charcoal, something the artist would abandon as she came to rely on paint alone to make shape. Frankenthaler developed and refined this technique in acrylic, which lent itself to pouring and drying more successfully than oil.

The scene is viewed from above, as if from a theater box, and the top half of Degas’s composition depicts the wings, where the dancers from the corps de ballet can be seen waiting for their moment to go on stage.

Like Picabia’s painting, Kandinsky’s improvisation is not entirely abstract.

At the center is a pair of sailing ships locked in combat, their tall masts appearing as slender black lines. Cannons blast as the ships are tossed upon turbulent waves.
