My ??genderadventures?? reread continues~ Next is BLOODY JACK by L. A. Meyer. Tattooed and filthy mouthed, the scrawny patron saint of orphans everywhere-- Mary "Jacky" Faber, ship's boy.
(the audiobook narrator for this series is especially great)
Short and stubborn and SO many broken bones, chivalrous to a fault, purple eyes and a magic sword and a talking cat that rides on your shoulder? When I was 10 I loved every word of it, and last year I worked my way through it in German. 💪💪
My reread continues! The books that inspired my book... Back to the beginning. Before there was Mulan, there was Tamora Pierce's ALANNA--
Page boy, squire, Lioness Rampant.
I've decided to reread/rewatch all the ??gender?? adventure stories I've devoured over the years that inspired #thedeepanddarkblue...! First sketch is of Mulan/Ping.
I'm between projects and would love to line up a comic or graphic novel to flat! Colorists/editors, get in touch with me at niki@niki-smith.com. :) Some books I've worked on include:
I've listened to some great, queer audiobooks this month. I love you, books and writers and storytellers. Keep doing what you're doing.
@boltcity and it's not #comicsDNA without #webcomicsDNA, really. I took a deep dive into the Wayback Machine and only found some 200px jpgs. RIP my youth.
Pants Press and @ErikaMoen @jenwang @dmeconis @verabee were all I wanted to be as a teen! I drew my Es like Return to Sender for years.
My #comicsDNA, full of newspaper strips, queer elves, gender chaos and the first anthology that made indie comics feel like something I NEEDED to be part of.
Filthy Figments is having a 40% off sale this weekend-- it's a huge collection of erotic comics by women & nonbinary artists, and I've drawn something like 600 pages of smutty, queer comics for them over the years! https://t.co/UM4kqvsuyp
