@ksweeen You don't really start seeing "oh yeah, that's Shakespeare!Richard III" until the 19th century, and even here Edwin Booth seems to have gone in mainly for heavily indicated kyphosis.
@ksweeen David Garrick was painted in the role several times in the 18th century with nothing really suggested in his costume but high shoulders.
