Y'all ready to rock?
Let's have a totally vapid thread about bands with paleo-themed names. Are you a fan of any of these?
Well, I guess Dino-Riders are back. I like the solid colors, but I'm not in love with every sculpt.
“Album of Prehistoric Man” (’75) also features Ruth’s paleo work, though depicting humans was never his strong point. He could draw them fine, but there is a cartoonishness about them that makes the book feel like the weak link in the series.
Both albums were combined into one volume which featured this awesome blue Smilodon on the cover.
All the Album of books also featured little Ruth-drawn vignettes alongside the text.
Many of the pictures in “Album of PA” are burned into my memory, including the bloody cave bear & my favorite brontothere image of all time.
When I think of Aepycamelus (nee Alticamelus) I think of Ruth’s lanky beast, pounding back the predators with its hammering hooves.
...“Album of Prehistoric Animals” (’74). I think this book showcases some of Ruth’s best work. While his dinosaurs are appropriately massive, they’re posed. The animals in this book are dynamic and living. (No doubt the old active mammal vs lazy reptile trope helped fuel this.)
When pulp publisher Ziff-Davis moved to NYC, Ruth decided to stay in Chicago, turning to advertising, comics, and illustrating children’s books.
So, although geologists might balk at the thought of "GvsK"'s hollow earth, I only smile, happy to see the old cliche's still got some life in it.
