This was a speculative painting of a mystical moonlit scene. I always liked this one but the client didn’t go for it.

This was the very first illustration I did for ‘East o’ the Sun and West o’ the Moon’.
The scene where the lassie is abandoned in the wood. This one set the mood for the rest of the book.

My first effort for the woman with the golden apple and, to the right, the version that is in the book.

“Or maybe you are the Lassie who ought to have had him?” asked the old woman.
Yes, she was.’

‘East o’ the Sun and West o’ the Moon’ Asbjørnsen and Moe, illustrated by me.

So nice to visit my drawing of the floating island of Laputa from Swift’s ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ in Dun Laoghaire’s LexIcon library where I drew it over a weekend in 2018.
It’s in need of a touch up. I’ll bring my chalks next time.

It’s today!
I painted these Orcas on a postcard for an exhibition a couple of years ago.

Here is a study that was used. This was the scene in The Haunted Lake when Ellen is grieving over the loss of her Jacob.

“Ellen kept searching. After a week she started fishing as she searched, and then she was just fishing.”

I illustrated “Haunting Ghost Stories” (Octopus Books 1987) so long ago that I hardly remember it but I do recall really enjoying painting this big, old American car for “The Haunted Trailer” by Robert Arthur.

I love the looseness of this little watercolour I found at the back of a drawer. I resolve to try to stay loose in 2022.
Happy New Year everybody!

My version of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.
I’ve just listened to a very good episode of In Our Time with Melvyn Bragg on Radio 4. Melvyn and the panel discuss A Christmas Carol and the history of Dickens’ writing it.
