The Diviner arc is a personal favorite from Season 1 not only because of its story and the comedy in it, but also 'cause it expanded the Gintama universe a bit more through the introduction of a demon race, and the practice of onmyōdō, the latter which I consider story relevant.
My top 5 animanga movies:
1. Gintama: The Final
2. Kara No Kyoukai 5: Paradox Spiral
3. Fate/Stay Night: Heaven's Feel trilogy
4. Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya.
5. Kara No Kyoukai 7: Murder Speculation Part B https://t.co/TF6TEjWLD4
At Jump Festa 2015, Sorachi initially and jokingly called the Rakuyou Decisive Battle arc the “Shinpachi's Loss of Tsukkomi” arc.
The official name was firstly mentioned in issue no. 8 of Weekly Shonen Jump back in 2016.
Haven't talked about it in months, but I recommend reading & watching Rumiko Takahashi's Ranma ½, especially if you like both Gintama and 90s anime. It's an episodic styled martial arts rom-com, and one of the most influential in animanga.
A reminder that, a foreign university student wanted to write an essay on how Gintama & its use of tsukkomi, about how the series is a good representation of this comedy subgenre, and sent a letter to Sorachi to ask about it.
Gintama comedy is great because it's well executed.
