There's a minor detail in Gintama ep. 141, where Kamui made mention of having "the blood of Asura".
Asuras (demigods in Hinduism) are said to reflect the mental state of human beings obsessed with force & violence, and are always looking for ways to get into fights.
When Tatsuma recovered, he rushed back to the battlefield, but the war's survivors already fled and scattered as they were being pursued by the Bakufu, and the war ended.
Only person Tatsuma was able to find was Gintoki, and this last convo took place at that very moment. (2/2)
This convo between Gintoki and Sakamoto (ep. 23) took place before Shoyo's loss.
Sorachi stated in Gintama vol. 63 that Tatsuma retreated from the frontlines after sustaining serious injuries, while Gintoki and co. got defeated, resulting in Shoyo's death. (1/2)
