This convo between Gintoki and Sakamoto (ep. 23) took place before Shoyo's loss.
Sorachi stated in Gintama vol. 63 that Tatsuma retreated from the frontlines after sustaining serious injuries, while Gintoki and co. got defeated, resulting in Shoyo's death. (1/2)
Happy birthday to the GOAT series!

The blue drawings (blue + turquoise in the manga) on Gintoki's kimono represent the clouds ☁️.
They're to signify that Gintoki is "an undecipherable and unpredictable man like the clouds that move in the sky" (Gintama vol. 63) 🦍
A reason why Benizakura was so fun when i first watched is not only 'cause I went into Gintama blindly, but also 'cause I had low expectations in terms of action, since I always knew it to be comedy.
Yagyu/Fuyo arc type of seriousness is the max I expected, but not beyond that.
