This scene is really good. It really makes you feel for Lance beyond him being the funnyman and it's one of the few scenes that allow a real confrontation with the loss of Altea. Emotional depth to Coran is always appreciated. He's a really good person.

I really wish we had gotten more flashbacks to Hunk and Lance prior to the Garrison. They're established as being really close friends, so it's tragic that their duo-dynamic gets lost a lot over the show.

Also timeline things... Keith grows like a good head and goes from one to two stripes in his time at the Garrison, so there's presumably an actual few years here. Kerberos happens when Keith is 17 canonically, so I guess he'd get into the Garrison at ~14?
