September 28, 1854: Painter Ignác Roskovics is born in Slavkovce 🇸🇰 († 1915). His work spans many classifications: frescoes, altar paintings, iconostases, portraits, genre scenes, still lifes, & book illustrations. Roskovics was a representative of the Munich School realism.

August 7, 1906: Dezider Milly, painter & graphic artist, is born in Kyjov 🇸🇰 († 1971). His unique style combined various artistic currents of the 20th century. Milly's art took motifs from the Carpathian landscapes and Rusyn society. https://t.co/r9NxNFhWF2

July 15, 1927: Julijan Kolesar, painter, ethnographer & poet, is born in Đurđevo 🇷🇸 († 1992). His paintings were inspired by medieval iconography & Vojvodina Rusyn life. Kolesar authored over 100 mostly polemical works on Rusyn-related topics. https://t.co/fQpIRnXJb1

June 4, 1910: Painter Michal Dubay is born in Hačava 🇸🇰 († 1993). Most of his works were in the Cubist style based on themes & landscapes from the Rusyn countryside as well as sacred subjects. Dubaj was also active in promoting Rusyn art, helping establish several art venues.

May 26, 1931: Ivan Nestor Šafranko, painter & sculptor, is born in Turia Pasika 🇺🇦 († 2020). His art is dominated by figurative motifs in oil, often combined with other techniques. Known for experiments, Šafranko combined various mediums, incl. photography & text-like materials.

May 17, 1912: Painter Ernest Kontratovyč is born in Kalná Roztoka 🇸🇰 († 2009). A practitioner of the Subcarpathian School of Painting, he developed his own expressionist style. During post-WW2 Soviet rule Kontratovyč managed to avoid moving to Socialist Realism.

February 4, 1941: Painter Michal Čabala is born in Nižné Čabiny 🇸🇰 († 2002). He turned from figurative compositions & portraits to landscapes, village & urban scenes, mostly of Rusyn areas. Čabala's monumental works adorn public buildings in several towns & villages in Slovakia.

January 29, 1932: Andrej Gaj, painter & illustrator, is born in Sukov 🇸🇰 († 2016). His works are primarily landscapes, still-lifes, portraits & figurative compositions. Gaj has also completed large-scale works (mostly in mosaic) for public buildings in eastern Slovakia.

December 2, 1936: Atanas Fedynec (pseud. Fruci), physician & painter, is born in Užhorod 🇺🇦 († 2012). He was an accomplished painter of landscapes, portraits & still-lifes, & worked primarily in a variant of expressionism. Virtually all his subjects are drawn from his homeland.

November 14, 1910: Vojtech Adalbert Borecký, painter & pedagogue, is born in Ubľa 🇸🇰 († 1990). As a representative of the younger generation of the Subcarpathian School of Painting, he is best known for his expressionist landscape & genre scenes.
