Setting new wealth amidst Old Masters was not uncommon for Sargent, who also did it in the background with his portraits of The Wyndham Sisters (technically old money) and Mrs. John Jay Chapman.
For his depiction of the Danaïdes at the @BPLBoston, Sargent combined exotic and modern source material. He is said to have used none other than three Zeigfeld Follies girls as his models, which he combined with echoes of his images of Bedouin women carrying water jugs of 1891.
One of my favourites - the 1889 'Paul Helleu Sketching his Wife'. Capturing the delicious laziness of a summer's day in the Cotswolds, #Sargent uses Impressionistic line and compositional asymmetry to breathe new life into an informal plein air portrait study. @brooklynmuseum
#Sargent wrote to Vernon Lee in 1884 that the 'only painters were #Velazquez, Frans Hals, #Rembrandt and #Vermeer', but I would make an assertion that #VanDyck should be on this list, especially when it comes to gestures. Which is which?
If you can ignore my misspelled name, these are some very exciting proofs that just came through my inbox. Very proud of this one! Also, there are some really beautiful Sargent copies of Velazquez in the collection @russborough, if you're in that part of the world.
A strange and beautiful symmetry between #Sargent's early seascapes of the 1870s, and those of American landscape painter #WinslowHomer. A balance between #Turner-esque light and crisp Impressionistic modernity.
The (possibly contested) ladies of #EdwardVII. Two mistresses and one possible daughter (Baronness de Meyer, daughter of the Duchess of Castelluccio.)
We are taking a much needed long break for the next few days, but will be back on Tuesday for more #Sargent adventures. #FridayFeeling
The practically gravity defying silk sash and ever disappearing waist of #Sargent's Miss Daisy Leiter (later Countess of Suffolk).@EHKenwood
The Duchess of Sutherland, in a pale green gown embroidered with silver rosettes, is #Sargent's modern take on garden goddess @museothyssen
