How desolate our room
where once our pillows
lay so close together;
from dawn to darkness
the day is full of sorrow,
from dusk to day-break
I sob and sigh unsleeping,
and know not where
to turn to in my misery.
I'll love you ever
though I may never see you.
—Hitomaro ca.662–710
Happy Holi!
In the 1950s, there was an explosion of colors on canvas led by the Washington Color School with artists like Morris Louis leading it. Like Holi, it is a celebration of colors.

@dpanikkar A very happy new year to you and your family as well.
May the new year be bountiful like Tanaka's persimmon tree, rising above the grays.
DAYS
What are days for?
Days are where we live.
They come, they wake us
Time and time over.
They are to be happy in:
Where can we live but days?
Ah, solving that question
Brings the priest and the doctor
In their long coats
Running over the fields.
—Philip Larkin
Mondrian, known for his colorful grids, painted about 150 portraits of flowers, mostly with just one flower at a time. I found this spellbinding - just notice how those lines turn into a ball of curling petals!

Yesterday it was raining, so we decided to do some non-field activities. One was to visit the Cape May Observatory, which has a great selection of nature books. In the used books section, I found a true gem — a signed copy of Salim Ali’s 1961 field guide with color plates!
