FROM RUSSIA: Nikolai Tyrsa was an influential painter from Leningrad, who was part of its famed landscape school and also became a pioneer of Leningrad’s book illustration school. These are the illustrations for Samuil Marshak’s “Squad” about a group of pioneers by the river.

FROM DENMARK: He started as a cartoonist for a trade union newspaper, but Ib Spang Olsen is best known for his illustrations for children's’ books: realist but fantastic and tinged with grotesque, containing worlds and multitudes within.

FROM TEWA PEOPLE & US: Meanwhile, Helen Hardin’s daughter Margarete Bagshaw went in the steps of her ancestors, too: her paintings are fresh cosmic visions that also remind us of her foremothers.

FROM ÅLAND ISLANDS & FINLAND: A child of a fisherman from the Åland islands, Raimo Matisson currently lives in Turku in Finland. His paintings as soft as falling snow and as hazy as the sky at dawn, are gentle visual poems of the north.

FROM INUIT PEOPLE: If you squint enough, maybe you’ll see yourself in the idyllic northern visions of being one with nature that Kenojuak Ashevak created with her honest, unwavering hand—it’s rumored she never even used an eraser because nature doesn’t either.
