FROM INUIT PEOPLE: Throughout her extensive career Kenojuak Ashevak went from being the first woman on Cape Dorset to engage in arts to becoming the subject of many documentaries and news reports: no one could resists being fascinated with her majestic creatures.

FROM INUIT PEOPLE: Kenojuak Ashevak had a lot of suffering in her life: for instance, 7 of her 16 children died due to the government’s involvement in the lives of Indigenous citizens, and tuberculosis. But you could never tell from her intricate, bright works.

FROM MEXICO:  David Alfaro Siqueiros was tireless, whether it was in art or real life. He became one of the most fascinating Mexican muralists, introduced Jackson Pollock to his method of paint splatters, and tried to assassinate Leon Trotsky. Not too shabby for a biography.

FROM JAPAN: Hayao Miyazaki needs no introduction, nor do his brave works of imagination & urgent politics: did you know that “Howl’s Moving Castle” was created as an outlet for his rage about the US starting the Iraq war? But his “Pippi Longstocking” remains obscure to most.

FROM BELARUS: Vitebsk area is best known for its Jewish artists, like Malevich, Chagall & Lissitzky. Jauhien Zajcaw was an artist of Belarusian descent who gained prominence across the Soviet Union, from Moscow to Minsk, with his portraits of ordinary people's power.

FROM RUSSIA: You might not recognize his name but you probably know Yevgeniy Migunov's work: after his colleague, illustrator Victor Chizhikov sketched the fluffy bear Misha, Migunov was in charge of character design for the symbol of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.

FROM CZECHIA: Jan Kubíček was also very fond of illustrating children's’ books and spent a decade working for the publishing house Albatros based in Prague. These ones accompanied a book by Soviet writer Boris Zakhoder.

FROM CZECHIA: Czech artist Jan Kubíček was a constructivist who never failed to embrace the whimsical. He worked with geometrical forms, stern and relentless, and then populated them with a happy community of naughty bugs in hats and shoes.
