FROM RUSSIA: The leading graphic artist in the Soviet Union, Dementy Shmarinov achieved the impossible: he made the works of such Russian, Ukrainian and World literature giants, as Lermontov, Gogol, Tolstoy and Hemingway, better by masterfully illustrating their works.

FROM CHINA: You’d recognize his signature laughing self-portraits everywhere, and that’s probably the secret to Beijing-based artist Yue Minjun’s fame: the most successful jokes are those where one starts by laughing at themselves.

FROM JEWISH PEOPLE, FRANCE & BELARUS: As a budding teenage artist, Chaïm Soutine dreamed to see Paris. He ended up living there and becoming one of the city’s most prominent painters. When Nazis were closing in, he tried, in vain, to flee, but died in the occupied city.

FROM HUNGARY: Inspired by modern French art, Russian realist films and the folk traditions of his homeland, Lajos Vajda created paintings and collages that forewarned of the way things would unwrap later in the 20th century: the artist himself died of TB in 1941.
