To REALLY show some improvement, here’s a progression of self-portraits
And this was a piece I painted in watercolor in B/W then colored and compiled finished digitally. Never again 💀 2018/2019
I’d change things now, but it still makes me so happy unlike those dud pieces before.
But the more I painted traditionally, the better I got digitally! Although there was many a deleted file and many a tear. 1st from photo, 2nd from life.
The first image was my final for a class my very first college semester. I really REALLY tried. But I had no clue what I was doing in PS, let alone painting. The later images were from the next semester. Traditional helps my brain click 🤷🏾♀️
I’d been really really struggling in my illustration courses because digital did not come easily to me (still doesn’t really) + I’d gotten in I’m my head that it was what I was ‘supposed’ to do. These pieces were so unpleasant to do + make me feel gross (2016)

Overall value structure is important, but separating value and color in your brain can make it harder to add color in later, and confuse students and beginners
