Philippines #6: Dwende

A dwende is the Filipino variation of a mythical dwarf. They’re said to live under rocks, in caves, by old trees, in dark corners of your house, or in anthills and termite mounds. (Some say the Nuno sa Punso is a dwende, but that’s debated.) 🧵👇🏼

I thought these were the funniest things. Their physicality sounds straight out of a (precolonial?) Mad Lib 😆 Backwards feet, gold teeth, 2 feet tall, and known for stealing ube yams out of your yard. (I don’t blame them 🤷🏻‍♀️) 🧵👇🏼

This creature is a vampiric female shapeshifter of Filipino folklore. (It’s debated whether or not she’s considered a type of aswang, which is a shapeshifting evil spirit, or if they’re just similar. Aswang are typically male.) 🧵👇🏼
