Hawaii #5: Pele & Hi’iaka
This’ll be my last one for Hawaii! I just wanted to do a post on some mythology I grew up with. To be honest, I don’t love the story (it’s sad), but I’ve always loved the imagery of tension between the fire and water. 🧵👇🏼
Hawaii #3: The Merrie Monarch
A modern style of hula emerged through the various cultural changes in the 1800’s. Today, it’s called the hula ‘auana. 🧵👇🏼
Hawaii #2: The beginning of the colonization of hula 🧵👇🏼

Hawaii #1: On precolonial hula dance
When you think of hula dancers, what do you expect? Does this picture fall within your scope of reality? (Men? In loincloths?) 🧵👇🏼
Today’s #WomensHistoryMonth artist: Christine Ay Tjoe, an abstract expressionist painter from Indonesia.
Technically she’s contemporary (not historic), but I wanted to include her because I love her childlike whimsical paintings. They remind me of my own!
First up for the women’s art history series: Edmonia Lewis.
She was an American sculptor, of mixed African-American and Native American heritage. She was born free in upstate New York gained prominence during the Civil War. 🧵👇🏼
I actually really love botanical gardens… Here’s my favorite one in Hawaii 🌴
@racheljwelcher Hi! 🙋🏻♀️ I just drew a bunch of faces for a couple weeks, but I normally do indie kids’ books and personal commissions.
Some indie book work I can show! This is part of the first spread of an early reader book on art, taught and “tour guided” by Sammy Squirrel 🐿
My dear friends, the Weasleys. (Not their actual last name, but I call them that 😆)
Ya know, Mother’s Day is in a couple months and these things make great gifts 👀
