The books we love when we're young change our lives. So do the people who help us find them. So here's a big THANK YOU to all the amazing parents, teachers, librarians, booksellers & everyone else who works so hard to inspire the love of books! #literacy

Why read books? Because BOOKS open doors into other worlds, and other people's experiences of the world. They help us to see beyond our own point of view. And that is the basis of empathy. #EmpathyDay

It's #TeacherAppreciationWeek! I think we've all had life-changing teachers in our lives. This feels like a very appropriate moment to thank them, recognise their vital work – and SUPPORT THEM in doing that work, any way we can!

I honestly think many adults as well as kids would benefit from seeing these #coronavirus cartoons by Julia Donaldson & Axel Scheffler. They're a lot clearer, more helpful & perceptive than most government information I've seen. Also funnier!

How do we get kids to love reading? LET THEM READ THINGS THEY LOVE! Fiction or non-fiction. Poetry or prose. Picture books, comic books, anything at all. But there's something for everyone out there. And once they find it, they won't stop! #literacy

All reading is reading. If a child is enjoying reading something - PLEASE LET THEM! Never dismiss the things that they love as too young, or too silly, or not educational enough. Because those are the things that will make them lifelong readers. #literacy

My top tip for #WorldReadAloudDay? Whoever you are, make EVERY SINGLE DAY a #ReadAloudDay - because every day you read aloud to a child, you can change their lives forever! If you need more tips, here are some from @Literacy_Trust:

All reading is reading. All books are books. You should read whatever most interests you. You can NEVER be 'too old' or 'the wrong gender' for a book. Every reader is different, and should always have the right to choose their own books! #LetBooksBeBooks

A Christmas wish. I want EVERY CHILD to get what is theirs by right: libraries & librarians that will help them become readers. As Ray Bradbury said:
"Without libraries there would be no past. Without libraries there will be no future." #SaveLibraries

All the research shows that PLEASURE is key to #literacy. So if you see a child enjoying reading – whether fiction, non-fiction, poetry, picture books, comics or anything else – please, never dismiss their choices. Support them & help them become readers!
