1955, tragedy struck for 2 time Indy 500 winner Bill Vukovich will leading the 500 on lap 57. A 3 car pile up involving Roger Ward, Al Keller and Johnny Boyd happened in the path of Vuky. This sent Bill over the wall and hit a bridge and caught fire. Sadly, Bill died instantly.

Bill told another driver he did not feel he was going to finsh the race. The night before the 500 Bill told his wife Esther to forget about racing and wanted to go home.
Perhaps he sensed the tragedy that would come. Just before the race started he waved to his wife Esther .

The 1955 Indy 500 had a different vibe for Bill Vukovich! Going for 3 wins in a row which was never done. Bill,s car was fast all month. But weeks leading up to the race was different. Vukovich who was a quiet man seemed especially quiet.
Almost like he did not want to be their.

1953 and 1954 Bill Vukovich finally won the Indy 500 and he told the press to be fast at Indy just stand on the gas and keep turning left.
From 1952 thru 1954 Vuky led 71.7% of the laps at Indy.
Bill was one of the first drivers to exercise, ride a bike and not smoke or drink !

Bill Vukovich car for the 1951 Indy 500 was soild but a oil tank failure ended his day! In 1952 at Indy business picked up for Bill! Leading 150 laps and while leading with 8 laps to go a 50 cent part cost Vuky his chance to win his first Indy 500! Victory was in his grasp, but

Racing at Indy was not even on Bill Vukovich,s mind but by winning races and Championships in the West from 1945/1950, Indy came looking for Bill ! In 1950 Vuky got his shot at Indy but did not qualify. The car was not as good as its driver. 1951, Bill made the 500 field !

Bill Vukovich had a style of racing like no other! His stand on the gas get to the front along with being a excellent mechanic and set up guy way of life paid off! Bill won so many midget races it led to a solid ride with the Edelbrock Racing Team. Winning races thruout the West!

Vukovich started racing stock cars at the age of 18 an was a winner immediately! But in California during the time midget racing was popular and Vuky saw that! A car owner asked Bill to drive his car one night. The rest is history!
