As some of you may already know, I’ve been quietly chipping away at a 42-page queer comic based on the Russian epic poem “Ruslan and Ludmila.”

In light of a recent grant enabling me to complete this project, I would like to start sharing stories about its conception (thread):

Hour 5: I offered respect to my capacity for survival. The grey streaks in my hair are a symbol of strength. A chronicle of the battles I have won by living another day. I may not like fighting, but I am good at it. Perhaps that reminder is enough for now.

Hour 4: I told my partner about the demon. As I spoke, the lessons of the divine voice began to make sense. My partner helped me reason my way through the encounter. The demon fed on my instinct for empathy and care, and I could only defeat it by starving it of attention.

Hour 3: The demon came. I didn’t recognize it at first. It laughed and pretended to be a friend. It gave impassioned explanations for why I was wrong, and told me it was hurt that I couldn’t see the truth. The demon insisted it was trying to help.

Hour 2: A distant fragment of myself, which may as well have been a divine voice, was gently trying to teach me how to be happy.

I repeated after the voice, “I must learn to trust myself.”

The bittersweet realization came that it was preparing me for some kind of fight.
