As the Afghan war-elephants approached the Mughal front-lines Babur’s musketmen opened fire into their formations. While artillery did not play as significant a role at Panipat as was previously believed, muskets caused the panic-stricken pachyderms to turn on their own troops.
So ferocious was his reputation and so wary of his tenacity were the British that London’s publications frequently lampooned their own (often unsuccessful) efforts to rein in Tipu Sultan, as this - somewhat obscene - caricature illustrates.

Tipu Sultan had already despatched an embassy to France, led by Mohammad Dervesh Khan, in 1787, to explore the potential of a British ouster from India. This embassy, a consequence of his consistent and unrelenting struggle against the British, proved a sterile endeavour.
